Late Gamer Plays Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

A Review By Hidai Moya

What starts off as a gang banger story about boys in the hood in South Central LA evolves into a grander crime drama about mobsters & corrupt policemen across the landscape of the Western U.S.
CJ is a great protagonist who is acted extraordinarily well. When he is doing things for his gang or family, the story hits home but when he is running errands for others it made me lose interest.

The missions book ending the game that are set in LA & LV were the most enjoyable but I didn’t have fun being asked to do lots of things that have nothing to do with the main story. Although it lacks the sexy atmosphere & screwy irreverence that made Vice City so special this makes up for that with improved mechanics & a more impressive open world.
I’ll echo everyone’s sentiments that it desperately needs a remaster for it to shine brighter.

Late Gamer Plays The Witcher

A Review By Hidai Moya

The 1st game in The Witcher Trilogy has become one of my most notable gaming experiences.
Not knowing what to expect I was stunned to find a profoundly immersive story with remarkable world building, highly detailed character development, fascinating political intrigue, societal iniquity, & moral ambiguity.

This is a very well spun epic. Geralt, his beautiful sorceress lover Triss, & a mysterious child with magical abilities embark on an adventure of vengeance & mystery to unravel a dark conspiracy that threatens everything they love.
Though the combat took getting used to, I came to admire Geralt’s beautiful fight animations.

There were some bad game bugs that I encountered but it was nothing a few save files couldn’t fix. Whatever perceived shortcomings one may have about this game are overshadowed by its captivating ambition, quality storytelling, & alluring characters.
A very good start to one of the greatest video game trilogies of all time.

The Late Gamer Plays Assassin’s Creed – Syndicate: Jack The Ripper

A Review By Hidai Moya

Marginally better than the main game, this DLC has a more interesting plot with an improved sense of urgency than Syndicate’s original story.
With Jacob Frye gone missing, & Jack the Ripper on a murder spree, Evie Frye must find her brother & uncover the identity of one of histories most famous killers.

New combat mechanics are introduced in the form of fear gas, Indian impalement spikes, & brass rings which you can beat your opponent to a pulp with. The new fear system allows you to scare off multiple opponents as they witness you impaling one of their comrades. It’s a welcome change to Syndicates bland combat. Surprisingly you also get to play as Jack the Ripper himself too in a couple of sequences.
Although I wasn’t as satisfied with the end of the story, it is definitely a step up from Syndicate’s uninspired campaign.

The Late Gamer Plays Assassin’s Creed – Unity: Dead Kings

A Review By Hidai Moya

In this DLC, Napoleon Bonaparte begins his rise to power by seeking a piece of Eden buried somewhere in Royal necropolis of St. Denis. You must find it before he does by exploring its deep labyrinth of tombs & catacombs underneath the town.
St. Denis is a burnt out worn out locale whose beautiful monuments have seen better days. It’s gloomy atmosphere contrasts perfectly with the bright elegance of Paris.

Dead Kings introduces a new enemy type in the form of tomb raider gangs who bunch up on you like ants, but thankfully the game gives you a Guillotine Gun, the 18th century version of a grenade launcher, to combat them all at once (also introduced are some of the best cosmetic outfits of the game).
Continuing with inspiration from Alexander Dumas swashbuckler stories this is a solid spin off tale that adds more depth the world Unity.
I really thought it ended well & gave Arno a good send off.

The Late Gamer Plays Assassin’s Creed – Odyssey: The Fate Of Atlantis

A Review By Hidai Moya

Ditching the historical realism of the Peloponnesian War, this DLC ventures fully into Greek Myth across 3 dazzling realms: Elysium, Hades, & Atlantis.
Atlantis being the highlight of the 3 with its stunning architecture & waterways make it one of the most beautiful locales of the entire franchise.

Each realm tells its own story, the weakest being the 1st chapter but by the time we get to Hades & Atlantis the story becomes far more rewarding. New powerful Isu enemy types provide more challenging combat especially since we get to unlock new Isu enhanced abilities that truly make you the feel like a Demi God in a fight.
Admittedly its weakest point is the modern day stuff but ignoring that, fighting enemy outposts across gorgeous backdrops from Greek Myth is very epic & tons of fun.
It’s AC at its most fantastical.
