Late Gamer Plays Horizon Zero Dawn

A Review From Hidai Moya

Though imperfect, with room for improvement in the sequel, there is a considerable amount of love & passion that emanates strongly from this game.
It is the dazzling mechanical creatures, apart from its alluring heroine, that are the real stars of the show. The machines here are unequivocally some of the best creatures in gaming history. So incredibly lifelike in their movement, the combined great AI & the best animalistic animations I have ever seen, are a marvel to behold & are a labor of love. This, in turn, makes the combat breathtakingly cinematic, especially when paired with the game’s phenomenal bow, a weapon that makes all other bows near shallow by comparison.
It also has the added advantage of having some of the most beautifully manufactured landscapes of any open world title.
This is the birth of a new & phenomenal must play franchise.

Late Gamer Plays Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare Beta

A Preview From Hidai Moya

After playing the Modern Warfare Beta I don’t think the franchise has been this good in years.
It already tried & failed to capture the original magic of the series with its mediocre WWII reboot in 2017 & many other games since ‘Advanced Warfare’ have been fun but forgettable ‘Black Ops’ entries. It’s a nice change of pace to get back into the boots of a contemporary solider in a more realistic setting.
The maps I tried were pretty good, certainly better than the maps of the last two games & it’s 64 player ground war is chaotic fun even if its a far cry from a true ‘Battlefield’ experience.
After the classic ‘Call of Duty’ era from ’03 to ’06 it was the ‘Modern Warfare’ games that made CoD into the mega franchise it is today & it seems going back to that is the right move.

Late Gamer Plays Far Cry: New Dawn

A Review From Hidai Moya

This is not even the best post apocalyptic Far Cry game. That honor is held by the hilarious & amazing Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.
This is really just the diet version of FC5 that serves as a semi sequel to it wrapping up its loose ends that didn’t matter that much anyways. Still, at its core, it nonetheless is a true Far Cry experience with its classic outpost system.
Its new expedition mode is also a lot of fun; going off map to different places in the US to capture packages & escape just in time is rewarding.
I’m not sure I’m a fan of the new RPG leveling system though; whereas before you could kill anyone or go anywhere in FC, now you do have to do some grinding to level up your weapons.
It is an average game that does just enough right to be entertaining but it is definitely my least favorite installment in the franchise.

Late Gamer Plays A Plague Tale: Innocence

A Review From Hidai Moya

This is easily the most overrated game of 2019. Its graphics engine & visual palette are beautiful but it is in service of a story & mechanics that are lesser versions of better games that preceded it.
In the vein of Telltale’s The Walking Dead, God of War, & The Last of Us, this is yet another story set in an apocalyptic landscape where a de facto parental figure has to protect a young child from evil forces that want to kidnap it.
The writing is mediocre, it just assumes that you care because they are in danger but makes no effort to expand on any character development. In fact all of its characters feel very one dimensional.
Even with a delightfully disgusting climatic showdown the overall game play is not rewarding.
It tries to make you think there is more than meets the eye to its play style but it is all so superficial in the end.

Grade C+

Late Gamer Plays Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

A Review From Hidai Moya

“Lost Legacy” is a much better game than Uncharted 4.
It is a fresh new Uncharted experience that tactfully uses Hindu mythology to propel its well paced & well written story. Chloe & Nadine are a superlative duo. They are fully fleshed out human beings with their own internal motivations & it is so rewarding experiencing how respectful, & insightful, the writing treats them. I have not seen chemistry this good between two characters since Ellie & Joel.
Naughty Dog has yet again delivered breathtaking vistas with unparalleled beauty. No one can create cinematic action set pieces quite like them & the ones here are no exception. This is easily one of the best Uncharted games in franchise, (I even preferred its puzzles to those in 4).
If this really is the last UC game then it is one hell of a send off.
Consistently amazing through & through.
